Seau died on May 2, 2012. The decision was made on Tuesday by the United States Court of Arbitration for Sport, which hears matters relating to professional athletes. In an eight-page written decision, the arbitrators found that Seau's "disease was a direct and foreseeable cause of his death, and that this disease was an illness contracted in the course of his employment with the NFL." This ruling could have a big impact on millions of NFL players who have received a pension from the league, since the majority of the money is based on what the player earned in his active career. For example, Seau earned an estimated $3 million in his first NFL season in 1990. In his career, he played for the San Diego Chargers, Miami Dolphins and New Orleans Saints, and was a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Seau had struggled with depression and CTE. His children have sued the NFL for how the league handled their father's death, and in July, the California Supreme Court granted the NFL's request to remove the lawsuit from state to federal court, where the case is set to go to trial in March. According to Sports Illustrated, the family is seeking as much as $1 billion from the league. The family was happy with the ruling, which was reached after a hearing in L.A. on Tuesday. "Our father was a hero who served his country in the military and died as a hero. This decision is a testament to our father and his legacy, and it recognizes that Junior died from a disease caused by playing football," the family said in a statement. “We continue to seek justice for Junior, and we will continue to explore our remedies.
